The Story Behind Avocet Recruitment: A Name with Meaning

When Russell Gale and Mark Sommerville founded Avocet Recruitment Ltd in 2017, they wanted a name that was unique to the South West and deeply connected to the local area. Rather than opting for a generic recruitment agency name, they looked to the natural world for inspiration.

Russell, who often spotted Avocet birds during his commute along the Exe Estuary, saw them as a symbol of resilience and adaptability, qualities that align perfectly with recruitment. This vision laid the foundation for what has now become a leading recruitment agency group in the South West.

The growth of the flock

With the incredible success of Avocet Recruitment Ltd, the expansion into specialist divisions began.

The Avocet group grew from Avocet Recruitment Ltd to Avocet Legal Careers and Avocet Commercial Careers.

The Avocet Bird: A Symbol of Devon’s Landscape

The Avocet is more than just a name, it’s an integral part of Devon’s natural heritage. Here are some fascinating facts about this elegant bird:

  • A Devon Icon – Avocets gather along the Exe Estuary, (pictured here courtesy of Andy Hay – rspb-images.com) particularly between Turf Inn and Topsham, during the winter months.
  • The Avocet Line – The train route from Exeter to Exmouth is named in their honour.
  • A Conservation Success Story – Once extinct in the UK during the 19th century, Avocets made a triumphant return when beaches were flooded in the 1940s as part of wartime defence strategies.
  • Historic First in Devon – In 2023, the same year Avocet Legal was launched, the first-ever Avocet chicks were recorded in the county.
  • Symbol of Protection – The RSPB adopted the Avocet as its emblem, signifying conservation efforts and resilience.
